Cross, Jenks, Mercer & Maffei has a strong history of representing local governments. We proudly represent the Village of Lake Delton and many townships located in Sauk and surrounding counties.
As counsel for the Village of Lake Delton for the past fifteen years, we have the experience necessary to effectively address the issues that result from rapid expansion. With the resulting increased pressure for development will come a host of growth related issues: increasing needs for municipal services and municipal employees, development agreements, annexation, taxation and assessment, architectural issues, tax incremental financing districts, ordinances, zoning, traffic and road issues, sewer and water issues, labor and employment issues, and emergency services issues, to identify just a few. Cross, Jenks, Mercer & Maffei has assisted and guided Lake Delton through a period of tremendous growth over the past decade.
We also have extensive experience in cooperation between sister municipalities. We have extensive experience in shared municipal services and shared growth issues. We provided legal services that resulted in the creation of the following cooperative ventures: the Baraboo District Ambulance Service, the Delton Fire and Ambulance Commission, and the Dells-Delton Emergency Medical Service.
Should a municipality find itself in litigation of one type or another, we have experienced and skilled attorneys available; there is no need to search anywhere else for competent and experienced outside counsel for assistance. Attorney Wayne Maffei of our firm is the only Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist in Sauk County and has obtained the highest rating by Martindale-Hubbell, an international attorney rating service.
Cross, Jenks, Mercer & Maffei has served as defense counsel for municipalities in numerous cases throughout South Central Wisconsin. The types of cases range from property damage or personal injury alleged to have been caused by municipal employees to zoning challenges and discrimination lawsuits. We have appeared on behalf of our clients at the trial level and in the appellate courts.
Significant cases over the years have included the successful defense of a wrongful death action brought against a Sheriff’s Department for failure to prevent a homicide, and the successful defense of a township against a claim seeking damages for the wrongful death of a tree trimmer. The courts dismissed both cases prior to trial. CJMM also successfully defended an area township against an open meetings violation case, by winning the case first in the trial court and then again in the Court of Appeals. We have served as counsel in defending tax assessment challenges.
